Film
Waiting for Superman (9/10)
Extremely powerful documentary about the American schooling system, focusing on the unfair lottery system and the difficulties of less privileged families obtaining an good education for their children. The final chapter is very emotional and captures both the jubilation and despair of parents and children desperately hoping to hear their names and receiving the good education they truly deserve.
Supersize Me (8/10)
A light hearted documentary about the serious issues of fast food and it’s resulting effects on the populations health. The premiss of the film is to document the effects on Morgan Spurlock eating three meals at a McDonald’s store every day for a month. The film at first is rather funny, however as the eating continues the tone of the film darkens and serious health issues begin Arise. The documentary is very enjoyable, although its unlikely to stop the countless millions from gorging on fast food daily.
Man on a Wire (8/10)
This documentary explores Philippe Petit’s Dream to tight rope walk between the world trade centre shortly after there construction. The documentary follows the preparation and training of Philippe and is loyal followers across the world from Paris, Australia to New York. The Film tries very hard to romaticise Philippe’s dream of walking amongst the clouds, however the eccentric ramblings from the frenchman slowly being to annoy. Despite this one annoyance, the photography and spectacle of the crossing is beautiful and well worth watching. The most impressive thing about this work is its ability to use the world trade centre in a positive manner in the post 9/11 world.
Remember the Titans (9/10)
Despite my lack of knowledge and liking for American football, remember the titans is any extremely good film which I recommend to anyone. The film focuses on the merging of an white and an african American school within Virginia in 1971. The school hire an African American coach which leads to a lot of hate within the community and the pupils. The coach takes the pupils on a training camp away from the disapproving town and the pupils at first express a lot of race hate, slowly begin to bond and form a strong and powerful friendship which helps them win the county championship. The film provides a wonderfully uplifting feeling and teaches a valuable lesson about unity. Denzel Washington is alsofantastic as the coach.
Television
The Mighty Boosh
Hilariously Sureal comedy which follows the adventures of Vince and Howard who work in a zoo run by Maniacs. Extremely weird plot lines are interwoven with catchy songs and clever diaglogue. Even if you don’t like funny program’s, The Mighty Boosh is worth watching just to see what Noel Fielding is wearing and to marvel at his amazing hair.
Peep Show
Despite my girlfriends inability to enjoy peep show due to its cringey factor, I think the program is incredible, its dry humor is performed brilliantly by David Mitchell and Robert Webb and the supporting cast of characters make peep show a modern British comedy classic.
X-Men: The Animated Series
Not the best representation of the X-Men, however the title theme is still absolutely fantastic :’)
